RÉGINE CHOPINOT (LA ROCHELLE) WARNING HAZARDOUS WORKSHOP

14 - 20 AUG
11h - 18h

ENGLISH / FRENCH

Participants in this project will receive a stipend.
The workshops accompanying my latest piece W.H.A. («Warning Hazardous Area») are part of a research project on the topic of memory. How – with what gestures – can we trigger a memory sequence? How can we take the inventory of our memories to create something new? In working with the body as a source of memory, we do not enlist the help of any outside objects. Theoretical reflection is an integral part of our approach; every workshop is accompanied by scholars such as art historians, neurologists, theologians who initiate a discussion after each work unit. In addition, the workshop series will be documented in film, writing, and photography so that afterwards the results can be published as a book. (Régine Chopinot)

DJ U-Zul will mix live during the workshop.

Since 1986 Régine Chopinot is head of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Poitou-Charentes in La Rochelle in which bears the name of her company, Ballet Atlantique-Régine Chopinot (BARC). Her pieces are often created in collaboration with visual artists, musicians, or other choreographers such as François and Dominique Dupuy or Alain Buffard. Jean-Paul Gaultier designed her costumes from 1983 to 1993. The body of Chopinot's choreographic work is richly varied. In contrast to her early pieces, in which aesthetic provocation and humor were dominant elements, the second half of the 1990's was characterized by a series of meditations on nature and human nature.„ Chair-Obscur“ in 2002 marked the beginning of a new phase in Chopinot's work, in which she explores phenomena such as death, time, and memory with small groups of dancers, increasingly dissolving choreographic forms along the way. „W.H.A.“ pursues this path further, deconstructing time and space in an extravagant splurge of energy.
