This workshop is based on the repertory of movement Andréya Ouamba has developed by combining various techniques from traditional and contemporary African dance. Questions of the musical and corporeal rhythm of movement are explored by means of composition and improvisation. Ouamba demonstrates that percussion is not the only means used to convey rhythm in contemporary African dance; instead, its physical expression is divorced from traditional patterns and opened to influences from everyday urban life in Africa. The workshop is accompanied by live percussion.

Andréya Ouamba studied with Germaine Acogny and began his career in choreography as assistant to Chrysogone Diangouaya in Brazzaville. In 2000, Ouamba moved to Dakar, where he founded his own company, 1er Temps, and worked with Pier Ndoumbé (Cameroon), Michelle Rioux (Canada) and Elsa Wolliaston (Paris), among others. His acclaimed autobiographical piece, „Pluriel“, was presented in France, Belgium and the Netherlands in 2002; his latest production, „Pression“, premiered in Dakar in 2003. Andréya Ouamba regularly holds workshops in Africa and in France.
