Vernissage 16 AUG / 20 h /// Podewils‘sches Palais

“The close-up says everything. In a close-up, the audience is only inches away, and your face becomes the stage.” (Marlon Brando). Peggy Kaplan‘s images of both well-known and emerging choreographers will be presented in Berlin for the first time. In choosing to photograph performing artists in the photographer‘s studio – a different kind of stage – Kaplan plays upon the tension between feeling and artifice. She uses the portrait genre to approach dance obliquely, conveying qualities that are related to performance, but do not reproduce it. Each image offers a visual translation of the body, lending a unique identity to each artist‘s oeuvre; taken together, they make up an impressive collective portrait of the choreographic world.

Ea Sola (choreographer): “What part of me is captured by your lens?”
Peggy Jarrell Kaplan: “Your shoulders and above.”
Ea Sola: “Then I will have to put my body into my face.”
