Ihre Stücke spiegeln den fragilen Zustand einer Übergangsgesellschaft zwischen Kommunismus und globalem Kapitalismus. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER ist inspiriert von einer Erzählung Valeri Selenogorskis und erzählt von Armut, Trostlosigkeit und der Sehnsucht nach dem anderen, besseren Leben. Das Stück „ist die getanzte Utopie eines souveränen Miteinanders, der Traum von einer gemeinsam erlebten individuellen Freiheit. Die komplizierten Beziehungsgeflechte, die Olga Pona choreografiert, ähneln denen in einem modernen Liebesroman. Auf-einander-zu-eilen ist immer auch Vor-einander-fliehen, Sich-umarmen ist Sich-bekriegen, Zuneigung ist Abstoßung, Hingabe ist Widerspenstigkeit. Olga Pona übersetzt den transitorischen Zustand des Ostblocks, dessen Bewohner nicht mehr dorthin zurück können, wo sie herkommen, aber auch noch nicht dort angelangt sind, wo sie hinwollen, in wunderbare Bilder. Schwebend und kraftvoll. Melancholisch und heiter. Zeitlos und aktuell.” (Evelyn Finger, Die Zeit) THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER is inspired by life in provincial Russia under Communism in the 1960s. The work shows young people growing up with a vague sense that there are many “other sides of the river”: the Western world, of which they have received only occasional glimpses in movies or in the form of the odd tourist; the eagerly-anticipated state of adulthood; and the inevitable prospect of death. The “realism” of the work is defined more by the intensity of the movement vocabulary and the dancers‘ presence than by the logic of a “story”. It reflects the reality of Russia‘s current state of transition: a mixture of the Communism of the past, rediscovered traditional values, and the unrestrained, frequently even criminal, capitalism of the present.
