JOÃO
CARLOS SILVA

WORKSHOP
TAÍS VIEIRA/ JOÃO CARLOS SILVA,
MEMBROS CIA. DE DANÇA / BRASILIEN

"CHOREOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCES"

20 – 23 AUG /// 10 – 13 h /// Englisch /// Ufer-Studios /// EUR 75,-

Open to dancers and performers of all styles – Hip Hop, classical, contemporary.

Introduction to certain B-boy moves with a rhythm based on funk (top rock, foot work, freezes). The course objective is not to learn sequences or movements to the point of perfection, but rather to truly learn to hear the music and work in its rhythm so that one can create one’s own dance style and identity at a later time.

Open to dancers and performers of all styles – Hip Hop, classical, contemporary.

JOAO CARLOS SILVA
Dancer, Membros Company (Brazil)

João Carlos Silva began dancing at age 18 in his home city, Macaé, as a result of a project by Paulo Azevedo and Taís Vieira: Escola de Dança Rua (School for Street Dance). He was selected from a number of youths involved in the Hip-Hop scene. The project then transformed to the present CIEMh2 (www.ciemh2.com).

Three months after he entered the project he was accepted to the Macaé Street Dance Company, which then became the Membros Company. At the same time he had been training in capoeira for four years, giving him strong floor technique, and practicing karate for discipline and technique. At present he does Jiu Jitsu for physical work. João has danced in all of the Membros pieces: Statuas, lenguaje, Raio X, Meio Fio and now Febre, the last creation in a trilogy about violence.

His research in Hip-Hop has led him to develop his own vision and sensation of dance and B-boying, but also in a larger sense his own philosophy of this culture.

As a result of his experience with Membros he is looking to create his own language: more engaged than what is found in the simple execution of characteristic Hip-Hop moves by deconstructing the B-boy gestures and adding other elements, working on a funky style, his rhythmic basis… all in order to truly feel dance.

João has been offering workshops, classes and advanced training since 2000, at first at the Street Dance School and in two other Macaé municipal schools, and then he became a professor for a year and a half in the Petrobas program for youth. Since 2005 he has given numerous classes in the cities and at the festivals where Membros has been invited on their European tours. He was an essential part of the “Danse dans les Collèges” project organized by Le Merlan in Marseille (2007), gave an intensive workshop at Move Berlim (2007), at Mataró (2006), at the Hoptimum Festival in Melun (2007) and Fontainebleau (2008).
